The Washington County Sheriff’s Office handled three arrests, an unattended death and several unusual calls Oct. 2–9.
Abdul Safi, 30, was arrested at 2:08 a.m. Oct. 3 in Fort Calhoun for driving under suspension after being stopped for going 48 mph in a 25 zone. He was also booked for speeding. Jessica Satorie was arrested at 1:27 a.m. Oct. 4 near mile marker 34 on Highway 31 for willful reckless driving, open container, speeding 11–15 mph over and driving under revocation. Tavia Taylor, 45, was arrested Oct. 6 during a traffic stop in Blair on a Washington County Sheriff’s Office warrant.
Shortly after midnight Oct. 3, the Omaha police helicopter alerted deputies to a motorcycle that had fled a traffic stop northbound on 78th Street. It reached County Road P43 and County Road 40, then turned back into Douglas County.
Deputies took reports of an unattended death in Fort Calhoun and of child abuse on Oct. 5. No other details were listed for either. Crashes included a semi and SUV at highways 30 and 31 on Oct. 5, a motorcycle injury crash at County Road P35 and Stardust Lane on Oct. 3, and a two-vehicle crash in the 24700 block of Highway 30 on Oct. 8.
On Oct. 5, a man reported seeing two men abduct a woman in a pink dress at the Northern Lights Venue on Oct. 3. Deputies noted he may have been having a mental health episode. They told him they would contact him if anyone was reported missing.
On Oct. 8, a Dutch Hall Road resident reported bullets coming through the trees from a neighbor’s property. The neighbor said he was testing a new red dot sight on a target, and deputies advised him on safe shooting.
Several calls involved older residents. On Oct. 3, a neighbor found a disoriented Tekamah man walking in Herman, and the Herman Volunteer Fire Department transported him. On Oct. 4, deputies helped a vulnerable elderly woman in Fort Calhoun, and a state Department of Health and Human Services intake was completed. That night, a woman with early-onset dementia reported someone staying in her home who should not be there. Her son came to the scene and followed her home, and DHHS will be contacted. On Oct. 6, a person with dementia walked away from a County Road P37 home and was found on that road. They eventually agreed to return home.
Deputies contacted the father of a 13-year-old driving a golf cart through a Kennard park and yards on Oct. 2. They also explained road laws to riders and parents after complaints about ATVs in Kennard and on County Road 45 and about a golf cart in Washington. A motorcycle reportedly popping wheelies on County Road 49 on Oct. 8 was not found.
On Oct. 2, deputies rescued a cat from an elevator shaft on County Road P10 and freed children locked in a car on Highway 75 without injury. In Arlington on Oct. 7, a customer who accidentally paid with a “for motion picture use” prop bill replaced it. On Oct. 5, a juvenile girl walking along Highway 133 after a fight with a grandparent got her kicked out of the house was taken back home.
Deputies also held Coffee with a Cop at Good Shepherd and attended a first responders’ lunch at the train depot on Oct. 7.
