The Arlington Senior Center is full of life and joy, and director Cheryl Abbott wants the community to know the doors are wide open for newcomers to join the fun.
As the only senior center operating in Washington County, the facility serves as a vital social hub, offering a robust daily schedule of hot meals, early morning coffee and a rotating lineup of interactive games and wellness classes.
“The coffee pot is always on and the doors are always open,” said Abbott, noting that the morning coffee crew kicks off every day at 6 a.m. “We are wanting to get more people to come in during the morning time. They are a fun group but would love to add to it.”
Beyond the morning coffee hours, the center distinguishes itself by providing a hot, home-cooked lunch every single day. “We are the only center around that does it every day,” Abbott noted.
For those looking for evening options, the center also hosts a multitiered supper club. Area seniors have three flexible options to enjoy the meals, including traditional in-center dining and Meals on Wheels home delivery for individuals living within the city limits. “We have volunteers who bring the meals directly to seniors’ houses. This is a great option for those who can’t travel. They still get a delicious meal.” The third option is the center’s grab-and-go program. Simply call ahead, and the center will have your meal prepared and packaged for you or a loved one to pick up and take home.
The center’s weekday activity calendar ensures there is always a reason to visit, offering a diverse mix of classic games and wellness programs. The week kicks off Mondays with bingo at 9:30 a.m., followed by rotating afternoon card groups featuring bridge and canasta. On Tuesdays, card players gather for pinochle at 1:30 p.m., while Wednesdays bring the high-energy game of Pokeeno starting at 9:30 a.m. Thursdays are dedicated to physical wellness, with a tai chi group meeting at 9:30 a.m. to focus on gentle movement and balance.
Although Fridays are traditionally more laid-back, the center packs the schedule with special events, including upcoming indoor horse races and afternoon cards on the 16th. The annual Witches Tea will take place on the 23rd at 10 a.m. Guests are encouraged to arrive in festive clothes or a full Halloween witch costume to enjoy food, socializing and a “make-and-take” craft.
The monthly festivities conclude on the 30th with a pitch tournament at 9:30 a.m. Later that evening, the organization Roots to Wings will host a special Glow Bingo night for the seniors at the local auditorium starting at 6 p.m.
An essential upcoming resource for area seniors is the arrival of the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), which will be visiting Arlington on Oct. 27 and Nov. 19.
SHIP representatives will provide free, one-on-one consultations to help individuals navigate Medicare programs, identify the best plans for their specific needs and find ways to reduce health care costs.
Because personalized assistance is provided, appointments are strictly required. Local seniors can secure their time slot by calling the Arlington Senior Center at 402-478-4774.
Ultimately, the Arlington Senior Center stands as a vital pillar of the Washington County community, offering far more than just hot meals and card games — it provides a place of connection and belonging. Whether you are looking to liven up your mornings with a game of bingo or simply want to chat over an early cup of coffee, this lively organization is eager to welcome fresh faces to its close-knit family.
Director Cheryl Abbott emphasizes that you do not have to be a resident of Arlington to participate; seniors from across the area are invited to experience the warmth, energy and community spirit that define this remarkably fun group.
