The Blair Police Department is selling pink patches this month to raise money for Project Pink’d, and Sgt. Josh Hatheway said the effort has a connection inside the department. “Our office manager, Amy Thallas, is a survivor and is our personal connection to the event,” Hatheway said.
Hatheway said Thallas agreed to let the department use her name but declined an interview. Police Chief Jeremy Kinsey referred questions to Hatheway, a night shift sergeant, saying, “He’s been the driving force behind Blair PD’s involvement with the Pink Patch Project.” Information for this story was provided by email.
“The Blair Police Department started the Pink Patch Project in 2017 when the Nebraska Pink Patch Project was created,” Hatheway said. “I don’t remember all the details of why we joined, but the main reason was we wanted to continue to find ways to give back to the community and build a closer relationship.”
Hatheway said the department weighed other options before choosing a beneficiary. “Project Pink’d was one of a few organizations that we were trying to decide between,” he said. “We looked at what other agencies were doing as well and decided to do one that was not receiving as much attention at the time.”
Asked what conversations he hopes the patches spark, Hatheway said the goal is “to raise awareness of what great organizations are out there and also to continue to grow our bond with the community and express that our officers care and are more than just a badge and a uniform.” He described what a good October would look like. “A successful month would have us continue to spread awareness of what the Pink Patch Project is and what October means to survivors and people currently undergoing treatment,” he said.
Hatheway said the department also wants “to raise funds from the selling of our pink patches and the Nebraska Pink Patch Project shirts.” He also explained how to buy a patch: “Patches are $10 and can be purchased during office hours at the police department. We take cash and Venmo as payment methods.”
The Blair Police Department is at 1730 Lincoln St. Its phone number is 402-426-4747.
